BLM Brings Opportunity to The Hyacinth Group and Black Owned Businesses in the Hudson Valley
They say life is all about timing. The Black Lives Matter movement has taken over America in the wake of police brutality. While confronting these civil rights issues has been difficult, in many ways it has been a blessing in disguise for The Hyacinth Group.
In response to these troubling times, many companies have started giving back to the black community. More opportunities are available to our company now than there were just a few weeks ago. As the owner of The Hyacinth Group, I feel blessed to be a black female tech entrepreneur at this time.
Recently, A Little Beacon Blog commissioned us to create the ‘Black Owned Hudson Valley’ logo for their directory of local companies to support in light of Black Lives Matter. Our graphic designer, Perry Crosson, created a logo that captures the essence of black entrepreneurship in our area. Inspired by the story of the Alsdorf family, he worked alongside our copywriter, Keri Cornachio, to tell the story behind the logo:
“Built in 1915 by Simon and Ulysses Alsdorf, the building depicted in the logo was home to the Alsdorf Academy, a music and dance school founded by the grandsons of former slave George Alsdorf. George made his way to Newburgh in 1830 after years of slavery in Ulster County, becoming a central conductor for the Underground Railroad. He also taught music and held large concerts in places like the county courthouse steps during the 1840s. The Alsdorf Academy was just one of many businesses this enterprising family owned in the Hudson Valley. They also founded a bakery, hair salon and catering company that served clients of all races.”
As a black-run startup, I feel fortunate that A Little Beacon Blog chose us for this project. The logo pays homage to early African American entrepreneurs in our area, while looking forward to the future of black entrepreneurship. I am thankful that my team was able to take part in promoting other black businesses in our area.
Working on this project not only showcased the design and copywriting skills of our black-owned digital agency in the Hudson Valley, it also helped spread the word about my company. We truly came together as a team on this project. I am extremely proud and grateful for my talented team, and also excited for the opportunities that lie ahead for The Hyacinth Group. With great talent, you can achieve anything!
